Application Scenario

For this case study, two sensing scenarios were investigated:

1. Communication and sensor test on 60 hectares of operation
2. Radiation Detection and Classification with Cs-137 Radiation Source

To support the mapping and analysis process on site, the measurements obtained will be pre-processed and georeferenced in the air.
The application requirements are:

• Onboard pre-processing of sensor data
• Real-time transmission of sensor data
• Communication range greater than 1 km without mobile networks
• Intermediate storage of payload data in case of loss of connection and retransmission when connection is restored
• Integration of the received data into the end-user application

No immediately available system on the market meets the above requirements.
SKIDER’s communication and control system is perfectly suited to implement the intended application.

SKIDER Mobile is connected directly to the UAV. In the case of the DJI M 600 Pro, SKIDER Mobile is also powered directly by the drone. In this case, SKIDER Mobile uses the DJI Onboard SDK, so that the drone can be used for specific applications.

SKIDER Mobile supplies the radiation sensor with energy and establishes the communication link. The received data is enriched with geodata in real time and prepared for radio transmission. In this particular use case, SKIDER Link uses two redundant communication links operating at 2.4 GHz and 868 MHz. SKIDER Link continuously evaluates the communication services and decides which data packet should be sent via which connection. In the event of a loss of connection, the sensor data is temporarily stored and transmitted when the connection is restored. The transmitted data is received by SKIDER Ground and integrated into MIRION’s SPIR-Mobile analysis software.

In addition, the flight is monitored by the SKIDER UI.

In this configuration, it is possible for pilot and data analysts to work side-by-side for maximum efficiency.
